Reality TV

I’ve been watching an italian show called Mai Dire Reality. This is created by the Gialappa’s Band, who are 3 comics that make funny commentaries on whatever is shown on TV. They used to have a show all about soccer, where they would show funny footage of the week’s soccer games and interviews with coaches and players. You never actually see them, you only hear their voices over the funny footage, joking about how bad the players’ italian is, or how stupid they are or things like that.

Mai Dire Reality is about reality TV. They show how stupid some of the participant in reality TV shows are, and laugh at them.

This not only allows me to laugh at them but also to check out what type of reality TV shows are there in Italy now, since I completely missed the Reality TV wave in Italy.

I have to say, the worst of them all is a show called La Pupa e il Secchione, which pairs up a hot but dumb babe with a superintelligent nerd. Some of the nerds are ridiculous when it comes to relating to women, but the worst is the dumbness of some of the babes. They are so dumb that I am wondering if they are just acting. I mean, I can understand that they’re not good with history, or math, or science etc… But can anybody not recognize a photo of Hitler? Or of Chaplin? I find it difficult to buy that. Nontheless, I find it really funny when the Gialappa’s berate them and make fun of them. I haven’t laughed at a tv show in years.

Which reminds me how funny the italian shows are. I am somewhat familiar with Taiwanese TV, and I know that the TV personalities are really funny and spontaneous, they come up with really funny jokes on the spot, without script. However I find those shows very similar and not innovative.

The italian shows often come up with new things, which are then used in everyday conversations. For this reason whenever I go back to Italy I feel a little lost in my friends’ conversations. The majority of these shows are comedians in the classical sense, they come up with a repertoire and show it on TV (sometimes in theaters). For this reason they always try to re-invent themselves.

I am not familiar with American TV, but Saturday Night Live is similar to many shows in Italy.
